Billericay eased past big spending St Neots Town in the FA Trophy on Saturday courtesy of first half goals from Rob Swaine and David Knight.
Town made two changes from the side that hammered Tooting in midweek with Dale Brightley in goal and Richard Halle coming into midfield to replace the injured Benson Kpaka.
Billericay largely dominated the first half and took the lead when a long throw from Junior Luke was nodded back across goal for Rob Swaine to hook in. They doubled their advantage shortly before half time when Junior Luke and Sam Berry combined to thoroughly torment the visitors’ left back Rene Steer, sending him left and right before Berry delivered a low cross that was met by David Knight whose first half shot beat a weak dive by ‘keeper Michael Duggan.
St Neots had offered little as an attacking force before the break, but they started to come more into the game after half time. Their best chance of the match arrived five minutes into the half when, for the first time, the Billericay defence opened up for Stefan Moore who shot wide when he should have done better.
That was as good as it got for the visitors who began to lose their discipline with with the hapless Steer getting a second yellow card for a foul on Luke before manager Dennis Greene was sent to the stand for disputing a refereeing decision. In between those incidents, the referee who had a poor game, missed a clear-cut penalty for Town when Ashley Deeney tripped Jay May in the area.
Town’s numerical advantage was removed late on when Junior Luke also picked up a second booking for a needless foul but the Blues never looked in any trouble and will look forward to Monday’s draw.
