Billericay returned to the top of the Ryman Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Wingate & Finchley Match report now online...
Billericay returned to the top of the table on Saturday after goals from Richard Halle and Rob Swaine gave them a comfortable victory over Wingate and Finchley. After a recent wobble, Billericay manager Craig Edwrads will have been pleased with the response from his players, particularly in the way they kept a clean sheet with the visitors struggling to get so much as a sniff of a goal.
With Dave Collis serving a one match ban, and Junior Luke missing for the final game of his suspension, Town made just one change from the side that lost at Tooting, Sam Berry starting in midfield in place of Collis.
Billericay started well and took the lead when a Neil Cousins break ended with the striker’s shot being well saved by Bobby Smith. The ball broke towards Jay May who was baulked by Kieran Street just as he was about to pull the trigger. The referee pointed to the spot and Richard Halle smashed the penalty into the back of the net.
Further chances came the way of the Blues and Smith made another double save to deny May and Cousins, whilst another May effort was headed off the line by Marc Weatherstone.
Unfortunatley Cousins limped out of the action midway through the first half, but his replacement, Emeka Onwubiko introduced greater pace to the Town attack which the visitors struggled to contain.
Tooting had worked exceptionally hard in the first half, and it was no surprise when they began to tire early in the second. Billericay wrapped up the points midway through the half when a Sam Berry free kick was headed in at the far post by captain Rob Swaine. Smith made another good save to keep out Glenn Poole’s drive, then showed good reflexes to get up and stop the ball spinning back over the line. Right at the end of the game, Billericay ‘keeper Dale Brightley was finally tested by David Laird’s speculative effort, but he was equal to the challenge.
