First game of a new season is always a nervy affair. I was becoming increasingly nervous on Saturday as the countdown to kick-off began, so to see the face of a longstanding (school) friend of mine walk in was a welcome distraction, and I took my seat without the usual adrenalin shake.
Leatherhead were a strong sharp side and competed well first half, with both sides having good chances - 1-1 was about right at half time. But we took control in the second half and in the end were deserved and comfortable winners. Three points won on the first game of the season = nerves settled (for now!). I would've liked to have seen us be a bit more ruthless though, because if we are going to finish in the top five this season we’ll have to learn to punish teams when we have the chance.
It was good to be back in action, the Leatherhead board and supporters were a nice bunch, I enjoyed the day. I’m not sure why Tony Cooper got swept along with the tide and almost ended up on the Leatherhead coach, but by the the end of the day he was fully converted to a proper looking Bllericay supporter..
I’d like to quickly mention Bradley Woods-Garness. I was saddened to read of his arrest, I liked Brad. When he was with us he kept dubious company, but I thought he had moved on. It would seem not. He may not have been involved in the incident, but his arrest would suggest that he was/is not distancing himself from certain groups, and that association alone can, and will, cause problems for young talented sports stars. I hope those young people who are in similar situations, now take a long hard look at themselves, and consider very carefully their path forward.
That young lady was very brave in what she did, and I applaud her for that. I hope the law deals very firmly with those who threatened her, (who ever they are), I hope Bradley isn’t one of them.
Right, back to Tuesday: Can we do it, can we gain three points at Harrow?...it's about time isn’t it?
I’m brimming with confidence, COYB.
