League. Sunday 22nd March. Match report by Kim Coster. Billericay Ladies secure an important 3 points against Royston in the League on Sunday 22nd March 2009.
Billericay made their first visit to Royston Town in the ladies club history and were pleased to come away with all 3 points. Billericay started well moving the ball quickly forcing Royston into their own half, a counter attack from Royston saw a long ball played forward. Billericay defence delayed their clearance allowing the Royston striker to smash the ball into the back of the net on 15 minutes. Billericay were allowed straight back into the game and in the 18th minute a rare mistake by Royston’s goal keeper was collected by Lisa Silverton she played a one two with Kerry Oldham and Silverton struck the ball over the keepers head making it 1-1. Both teams then battled to take control of the game and for spectators it was long punts with end to end viewing. Billericay were enjoying the play and Leanne Wood won the ball on the right. Her infield pass was well taken by Hayley Spallin who attacked the box her cross to Oldham was struck too firmly and skied the home cross bar. Billericay then enjoyed a commanding 10 minutes. Lisa Robins split the Royston defence, Spallin’s shot was well parried by the Royston keeper, Royston cleared their defences only for Billericay to win procession in midfield Tracy Rodd to Robins whose flick was headed just wide of the post by Silverton. Billericay continued to press Silverton in fine form was fouled on the edge of the box, Robins free kick was cleared by Royston defence for a corner. Royston cleared their defences only for Rodd to win in midfield her pass to Silverton found her one on one with the last defender. Silverton’s pace caused Royston defence concern and she was was fouled on the edge of the box. Robins free kick was straight at the keeper.
Second half, Royston straight from kick off broke through Billericay defence, the Royston striker was one on one with Michelle Bridgeman playing in goal for Billericay. Bridgeman stood her ground and the shot went just wide of the post. In the 50th minute Gemma Ozbeck replaced Robins. Billericay’s formation was changed to help the players tired legs from their mid week game against Enfield Town. Hayley Spallins and Rodd worked well in Billericay midfield, Spallins battled to win possession and delivered a perfect ball through to Silverton who beat her defender and sweetly struck the ball over the advancing keeper. The ball appeared to stay in mid flight for ages before finally smacking the back of the net. On the 65th minute Sarah Matson replaced the hard working Oldham. Royston continued to press forward and Billericay’s defence managed to clear the lines, Spallin was unlucky not to get on the score sheet when her well taken corner was clipped over the cross bar by Roystons keeper, the last 10 minutes saw Billericay start to tire and Royston just couldn’t find their finishing touch, in the 83rd minute Sophie Whiting replaced the hard working Kiran Hare.
Team: Bridgeman, Rose, Wilson, James, Wood, Rodd, Spallin, Robins (Ozbek), Hare( Whiting), Oldham (Matson), Silverton Sub not used: Dimambro.
Kim Coster, Manger of Billericay, was pleased to take all 3 points, but realises Billericay’s performance needs to improve if they want to gain something from this season. The 3 points were well fought for and albeit the football wasn’t pretty at times, this was a huge win for us against a well organised team. Royston must be complemented on their club facilities - one of the best I have visited for a long time. We now meet Arlesey away Sunday 22 March at Arlesey Town FC, Hictchin Road, Arlesey, Beds, SG15 6RS.
