The Ladies “Blues“ back to Winning Ways
Match report by Kim Coster.

Billericay Town secure an important 3 points in the season’s campaign.

Billericay were slow off the mark and allowed Royston to play some good neat football.  It was clear that the battle was to be won in the centre of the park and at times became too congested to play football with neither team being able to spread the ball wide.

It wasn’t until the 25th minute when Billericay upped their game. Paris Smith attacked the wing and as she cut inside, the covering central midfielder put in a strong challenge that knocked Smith off her feet.  The referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the 18 yard area. Lisa Robins spot kick beat the keeper but pinged off the cross bar. Hayley Spallin reacted well and beat two covering defenders to head the ball back into the 6 yard area.  Bravely, Kerry Oldham beat the keeper to head home for Billericay.

The remainder of the first half was pretty evenly matched with neither team creating many chances.

Second half saw Royston again start the better team and pushed forward. Billericay's defence held firm.  Against the run of play on the 60th minute, Billericay were awarded a free kick on the edge of the 18 yard area. Robins strike this time cleared the keeper and hit the back of the net. 70th minute Gemma Ozbek replaced the injured Spallin.

Royston didn’t give up and started to dominate the play.  Good work down their left wing saw a player cut back inside her strike beating Hollie Dimambro in goal but hit the far post allowing Billericay to clear the defences. In the 75th minute Elaine Sykes, working her way back after a serious knee injury, replaced Claire Hunt. Billericay knew they had to dig deep. Sarah Bovington in midfield was working hard to break down Royston’s play.  In the 77th minute Sam Edwards replaced the hard working Kerry Oldham up front.

The last 10 minutes saw Billericay gaining some success down the wings.  On the 86th minute Bovington won the ball in midfield, played out wide to Smith who turned two defenders allowing her through one on one with the keeper.  Her final strike beat the keeper but crashed off the far post.

Kim Coster reflected after the game "Well played to Royston.  Their tactics worked well and were unlucky not to have got something out of the game. I have a good strong side this season with still players to return from injury.  Positives: last season perhaps we would have allowed Royston to get on the score sheet.  This new found confidence in the team is exactly what we need in our next game against a good experienced AFC Kempton in the league at New Lodge KO 2pm 13th September"

Congratulations to the Ladies “Reds”  who beat Shrimper Zone 11-1 on Sunday; to Jamie Oldham, Kerry’s nephew who scored 2 goals for Billericay under 9’s in their first ever league game and to Brian, Barry and the men who also won on Saturday.

Team: Hollie Dimambro, Vanessa Wilson, Claire Hunt, Sarah Bovington, Dan Rose, Theo Kiran, Lisa Robins, Hayley Spallin, Kerry Oldham, Paris Smith, Ginnie James, Subs Sam Edwards, Elaine Sykes, Gemma Ozbek.
