Match report by John Mifsud.
Billericay Town Reserves 3-2 Biggleswade Town Reserves Capital League Even on an evening that the heavens decided to give the New Lodge pitch a good watering, both sides still went out and played some lovely entertaining football with no shortage of end to end action.
The visitors took the lead on 30 minutes with the cleanest of break aways, which in turn led to an easily executed finish, leaving the young Blues not only gutted, but also with another sharp reminder that being lethargic in the middle of the park at this level of football will definitely get you punished! But in fairness, the goal truly was against the run of play. Numerous chances had fallen to the home side which, in their wisdom, they decided that they should wait a while before scoring (as to be polite of course!) and continuously tried to kick the ball clean out of the county! let alone trying to hit the back of a barn door.
But then, thank God the penny dropped ater a lovely breakaway run from striker Mike Marsh down the left hand side ended with a well struck lob that caught the Biggleswade keeper grabbing a handful of fresh air watching the ball strike the back of the net behind him to make it one apiece for half time. After a quick polite chat (of course!) and a half time cup of warm milk and cookies for the kids, they came out leaving their teddy bears behind and got down to business, showing our hosts some delayed True Blue Steel.
It didn't take long! and before you could say 'time for bed children', Harry (Harrison Chatting) unleashed the utmost of ferocious strikes from a least a 1/2 mile away, this time giving the poor away keeper still nothing to save but more fresh air. It hit the back of the net with such force that their keeper said the shot was far too hard and dangerous and didn't want to play any more..... (kidding). With the score line now 2-1 in Billericay's favour, and everyone happy except with the gate receipts! what could go wrong? I know, how about our keeper forgetting how that tune goes "should I come or should I stay?" I know he thinks, I'll come out really late and then flatten him, why not? It's what they taught me in Iraq if I don't like the look of him. Hence, the ref gives him a yellow card and the visitors a penalty! But, their penalty taker must have taken notes from our lads in the first half and tried to nick poor Ian's match ball by kicking it clean out of New Lodge back to Biggleswade. On 80 mins, Biggleswade did get level when again we decided to allow their striker to run almost the whole length of the pitch (being polite and all that) and slot the ball this time comfortably past our keeper, to make it 2 - 2. I think the thought of them going back into the dressing at full time to face another polite chat with M&M (Mifsud & Moody) wasn't quite how the fairy book ended, so they spent the next 10 minites playing out of their nappies trying to bag the three points they painfully tried very hard to give away. On 87mins, up pops Mike Marsh again to smash home Town's winner ! Conclusion: Was it Billericay U18S vs. MENS ?? ......... You could say that, so what! bring em on. All jokes aside, this was a very good game. All Our lads played out of their skins, otherwise they don't wear the shirt. We out-played yet again, a very strong good side With our very talented squad of youngsters.
