The Blues will travel to Aveley’s Parkside Stadium to face Grays Athletic this Wednesday evening.

Grays Athletic are members of the Isthmian League and can now accept crowds of up to 400 for their home matches.

There are Track and Trace requirements in place for this match. The club will have forms for spectators to complete. They are also advising that smartphone users can download the evePASS app, which will allow them to scan a barcode as they enter the stadium. This will then register their details if required.

Staff will be available to help when entering the ground.

Grays Juniors were formed in 1890 and merged with Grays United, then competing in the Southern League, to form Grays Athletic.

Grays were founder members of the Athenian League in 1912 and the Corinthian League in 1945. They re-joined the Athenian League in 1958 and would go on to face Billericay Town nearly 30 years later.

By 1977 the Athenian League was reorganised and existed as a single division. F.A. Vase holders Billericay Town were promoted from the Essex Senior League for the 1977-78 season and the two Essex sides would meet four times before the season came to an end.

The first ever meeting between Grays Athletic and Billericay Town took place on Tuesday 6 September 1977, very nearly 40 years ago. The match, played at Grays Recreation Ground home was settled by one goal, scored by The Blues Billy Bingham. Bingham had joined from Bowers United that summer.

The second meeting, and the first at New Lodge, came on 21 January 1978. Athletic made the short trip in to Billericay as they competed for a place in the fifth round of the F.A. Vase.

On this afternoon Ricky McQueen and Doug Young would help Town to a 2-1 victory in front of 1,791 spectators.

Grays Athletic visited New Lodge again on Tuesday 4 April 1978. A crowd of 1,001 fans filled New Lodge to watch a 1-1 draw, with Fred Clayden scoring The Blues goal.

Grays Athletic made the short journey to New Lodge on Saturday 13 May for the Athenian League Cup. The crowd was recorded as 1,902. Geoff Aslett and Fred Clayden scored for The Blues as the Athenian League double was secured.

The two sides last met in January. Town’s home fixture, in the quarter-final of the Essex Senior Cup, was switched to Aveley. Jake Robinson scored a hat-trick with Jamie O’Hara also scoring in a close run 4-3 win.

Jim Cooper’s Grays side were sitting in 14th in the Isthmian League North Division when the season came to an early end.
