During the 1988-89 season they made it to the F.A. Cup Third Round where they were beaten 1-0 at home to Second Division Blackburn Rovers.
It was during The Wings time competing in the Athenian League they first met Billericay Town. Welling came to New Lodge on 11 November 1978 and left with a 1-1 draw. Doug Young scored for The Blues.
They met again the following May at their Park View Road ground, which they’d moved in to two years before. Fred Clayden scored twice with Dave Groom completing a 3-0 win.
The most recent meeting between these two sides took place during August. Jordan Parkes scored his first goal for the club, a great shot from outside the area found the top corner after 18 minutes.
With 5 minutes left of the first half Welling were level. Another shot from the edge of the area curled in to Alan Julian’s far post.
The match was in added time when Rob Swaine was adjudged to have fouled Moses Emmanuel in the area. Jake Robinson, who had come off the bench, stepped up to score the penalty.
Blues legend Swainey still plays for Welling. He is joined by ex-Town players Dipo Akinyemi and Adam Coombes.
