Billericay Town v Leatherhead
Isthmian League, Premier Division. Saturday 9 September 2017, 3:00pm.

This weekend we welcome Leatherhead to the AGP Arena.

Last weekend they hosted Cray Valley Paper Mills of the Southern Counties East League for a F.A. Cup 1st Qualifying Round match. Leatherhead won 6-0.

The Tanners currently sit in second place having enjoyed a good start to their season. Current manager Sammy Moore signed several very good players during the summer including Sean Clohessy (Gillingham, Southend, Colchester), Lee Minshull (AFC Wimbledon, Newport County) and Jack Midson (Stevenage, Oxford, Southend, AFC Wimbeldon).

Leatherhead started their season with a 2-1 home win against Lowestoft Town.

They’ve only played one away game, at Fetcham Grove, against Kingstonian, which Leatherhead won 4-0.

Leatherhead F.C. can trace their roots back to 1907 when Leatherhead Rose F.C. were formed. The current club was created when Leatherhead Rose merged with Leatherhead United, formed in 1924, in 1946. Fetcham Grove had been the home of the United club and has been home of Leatherhead ever since.

Leatherhead made national headlines during the 1974-75 season when they reached the Fourth Round of the F.A. Cup. They beat Bishop’s Stortford, Colchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion before drawing Leicester City at Fetcham Grove.

Leatherhead requested that the match was switched to Filbert Street. The Tanners went in to a 2-0 lead but the match ended in favour of The Foxes who won 3-2.

Leatherhead joined the Isthmian League for the 1972-73 season and quickly gained promotion to the Isthmian Premier. They were relegated in 1983 and wouldn’t get back to this level until 2011.

Prior to this their cup heroics continued when they made an appearance in the 1979 F.A. Trophy Final at Wembley, only to lose to Altrincham.

There stay was only for a season but they returned for the 2014-15 season and have been here since.

It appears that the first meeting between Billericay Town and Leatherhead was on Saturday 6 February 1982 at Fetcham Grove. Billericay Town had been promoted to the Isthmian League Premier Division the previous season. The match ended 1-1 with Town’s goal being scored by J McCombe.

The first meeting at New Lodge was in April 1982. A crowd of 504 were in attendance to witness a goalless draw.

Leatherhead finished ninth that season, with Billericay in seventeenth.
