CHELMSFORD CITY v BILLERICAY TOWN

Monday night will see the 28th meeting between Chelmsford City and Billericay Town. The first meeting took place in the First Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup on 16 September 1978.

The first half ended goalless but The Blues were given a chance to take the lead when Dave Groom was brought down in the area by former Town defender Lester Foreman. Tony Wakefield stepped up to take the penalty only to see it saved by Nick Penn in the City goal.

Just after the hour Phil Whettell ran through several City tackles on the right wing and crossed to defender Steve Bone. Bone, who had been suffering from a back injury and had to travel on the coach to away days laying on his front so not to aggravate it, took a touch and rifled his shot in to the net to give Town the lead.

Against the run of play City equalised as Mark Dziadukewicz’s left footed shot went under Steve Griffiths in the Town goal. Former Southend player Dziadukewicz would go on to play for Town during the 1980’s.

As the match drew to a close the crowd of 1,924 were expecting a draw and a replay at Writtle Street. Fred Clayden was fouled outside the end of the City area and Gerry Sullivan curled a shot over the wall and in to the top left-hand corner as the unsighted Nick Penn looked on.

Chelmsford City chairman Claude Seymour described the result as ‘the most humiliating experience’ since he’d become chairman of the club.

SEGREGATION

As with last season’s fixture this match will be segregated. Blues fans will need to enter through turnstiles 1 and 2.

Tickets can be bought online until 4pm on Monday afternoon and Blues fans purchasing tickets this way will see an ‘Away Fans’ section on the website. These tickets are cheaper than paying on the turnstile.

FAMILIAR FACES

There are a few familiar faces amongst the City squad.

Frazer Shaw joined Chelmsford in the summer having been with Concord Rangers last season. Shaw joined Billericay Town for the 2014-15 season under the management of Craig Edwards.

After a handful of appearances for Town Frazer moved to Dulwich Hamlet and then to Leyton Orient in League Two.

In City’s midfield is Chris Whelpdale. Chris joined Town in 2006 from Maldon Town. Whelps scored The Blues goal against City in the 2006-07 season play-off semi-finals. Town went on to win the tie after a penalty shoot-out.

Chris left Town and joined League Two Peterborough United.

During the summer City signed Jamar Loza who had left Billericay. Loza made 11 starts for The Blues scoring 1 goal, which was away at Oxford City.
