We at BTFC are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Derek Hanks

In the words of life-long friend, Peter White.

Last Friday 5th November 2021, our close friend Derek Hanks sadly passed away.

For over 50 years, ‘Hanksy’ has passionately served Billericay Town Football Club in all capacities both on and off the field. His legacy is the high status the club enjoy to this day. He, as one of the very special group of people in the late 60’s & 70’s, created the passion and total commitment for realising club members dreams to play football at the highest levels of non-league football.

Many people will know that progress to higher football leagues was by election and not promotion, since the ‘Pyramid System’ didn’t exist at that time. As the whole football world knows, BTFC achieved extraordinary success on the field over a ten year period in the late 60’s to 70’s era. With winning the FA Challenge Vase three times in the space of four years, the quest for election to the Isthmian League was supported by key FA & County FA members. This was largely due to their admiration for the club’s extraordinary management committee and depth of an amazing supporters group.

Derek was at the centre of this ‘Special Off-field Team’, his character as Chairman of the Sports & Social Club and ‘Lead Supporter’ were inspirational to so many people for seeking progress into higher football leagues.

Many of his football friends have over the years passed away since that era. He can now join them and reflect on such fantastically wonderful memories.

Rest in peace our most extraordinary friend.

We feel privileged to have met and befriended you over such a long time associated with BTFC to this day. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are sadly extended to Rosemary and all the family.

In memory of
The one and only
Mr Derek Hanks

Peter White on behalf of BTFC.
