SUTTON UNITED v BILLERICAY TOWN
Billericay Town will make their twelfth appearance in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup this weekend at Sutton United’s Gander Green Lane stadium.
Our hosts are no strangers to F.A Cup glory have reached the fifth round in 2017, beating Cheltenham Town, AFC Wimbledon and Leeds United prior losing out to Arsenal.
They’d faced Leeds United in The Cup once before. A Third-Round replay win against Hillingdon Borough set up a home fixture with Don Revie’s League Champions. Leeds won the match 6-0 and went on to lose the final against Chelsea.
Sutton’s first appearance in the First Round was during the 1945-46 season. Since then they’ve firmly cemented their name as Giant Killers in F.A. Cup history.
During the 1987-88 season Sutton were competing in the Conference and having beat Basingstoke Town they earned the chance to host Division Three Aldershot Town. The Yellows beat their league opponents 3-0 and were drawn away to Peterborough United. The Posh were members of League Division Four at the time. The U’s won 3-1 and travelled to Middlesbrough’s Ayresome Park in the Third Round.
A 1-1 draw saw a reply in South London but the Division Two side won 1-0.
The following season Sutton were beaten 8-0 at Carrow Road in the Fourth Round, but they’d made headlines prior to this when they knocked top flight Coventry City out of the competition.
A few seasons later, in 1993, and Sutton knocked out Colchester United and then Torquay United before losing out to Notts County in the Third Round. They’ve been beaten by County twice more since then.
Billericay have travelled to Sutton in the F.A. Cup before. On 27 September 2008 the two sides met in the Second Qualifying Round. Dave Wareham scored for The Blues but Town were beaten 3-1.
This weekend’s match will be the 32nd meeting between United and Town. The first took place during the 1981-82 season as both were members of the Isthmian League Premier Division. Sutton won both matches that season. The last time they faced each other was as members of the Conference South during the 2012-13 season. Sutton won both of those meetings as well.

FAMILIAR FACES
Amongst the Town squad are two ex-U’s players.
Alan Julian spent the 2014-15 season with Sutton United but his playing time there was curtailed by an injury in pre-season and he was released at the end of the season.
The Blues signed Moses Emmanuel from Sutton last year. He had joined Sutton the summer before and made a handful of appearances before moving to Maidenhead United on loan.
