Billericay Town v Canvey Island
Isthmian League Premier Division. Bank Holiday Monday 17 April 2017, 3:00pm
The Blues last home match of the season is a local derby with Canvey Island.
On Friday Canvey’s decent run of form took a knock as they were beaten at home by promotion-chasing Havant & Waterlooville. This leaves them a point above the relegation zone.
The Blues travelled to Canvey on Boxing Day. Goals from Michael Bakare and Dipo Akinyemi gave Town a 2-1 victory.
Canvey last visited New Lodge during August 2015. Blues player Callum Dunne was sent off a few minutes in to the match and Canvey went on to win 3-0.
The two clubs first meeting was on the opening day of the 1975-76 Essex Senior League season. Town left the Island that day with a 4-0 victory. Club record goal scorer Fred Clayden was on the score sheet.
The Blues will be hoping for another bumper attendance this Bank Holiday. New Lodge hasn’t had four consecutive crowds of 1,000+ since October 1977 when 2,173 saw Town beat Walthamstow Avenue 3-1 in an FA Cup match. Hall-of-Famers Steve Bone, Paul Scott and Doug Young scored for Billericay.
A week later a crowd of 1,111 came through the turnstiles for an Athenian League match against Kingsbury Town. Doug Young scored the only goal in what would be the fifth 1,000+ home gate in a row.
The biggest Blues attendance for a league match at New Lodge came in August 2007. Joe Flack scored from the spot as Town drew 1-1 with Chelmsford City in front of 1,572. The season before 1,508 saw Town beat Chelmsford 2-1 with the winner coming from Chris Whelpdale.
The third biggest attendance for a home match was 1,453 for the 2-0 win against Leiston at the start of this month.
Head to Head
The two clubs have met 35 times. Canvey lead the way with 17 wins with Billericay one behind on 16. There have only been two draws, both of which were goalless.
Billericay have scored 51 goals in these fixtures, with Canvey scoring 61.
